Long Answer Type Questions (LAQ) (6 Mark): HS English Suggestion 2022 (উচ্চমাধ্যমিক ইংরেজি সাজেশন 2022 (২০২২) – 'The Proposal' (Anton Chekhov) প্রশ্ন উত্তর :-

1. “My dear fellow, why are you so formal in your get-up?” Who asks this? Who is the person asked to? What is said about his get-up ? Why was he dressed in that way?  [1+1+2+2]

Ans.- In Anton Chekhov’s one-act play ‘The Proposal’, Chubukov says this.

The person who is asked to is Lomov who has come to Chubukov’s house.

Lomov enters wearing formal dress-a dress-jacket and white gloves. This formal dress is generally worn as an evening dress for ball or such other occasions. Chubukov asks Lomov why he is in his evening dress. It seems to Chubukov that Lomov has come for a New year’s Eve visit.

Though it is still unknown to Chubukov, Lomov has worn such dress for a special purpose. He has come to Chubukov to ask the hand of his daughter, Natalya, in marriage.

2. “She’s like a love-sick cat.”-Who said this and about whom? Analyse the character of the person, referred to here, under the light of the comment above.

Ans.- Chubukov says this in Chekhov’s ‘The Proposal. He says this to Lomov who has come with a proposal.

Chubukov says this about his daughter, Natalya.

When Lomov asks for Natalya’s hand in marriage, Chubukov becomes extremely glad and goes to call Natasha. Lomov, however, is not confident about his success. So, he asks Chubukov whether Natalya will consent to his proposal. Chubukov, then assures Lomov that Natalya is love-sick.

Chubukov rightly judged her daughter, Natalya. The extreme show of her emotion after knowing about the proposal supports Chubukov’s statement. Natalya wants to bring back Lomov even after such a furious quarrel. “I’m dying! Fetch him”! This extreme desire for a husband expresses how love-sick Natalya is in her lonely life.

3. Describe the first quarrel between Natalya and Lomov.

Ans.- In his attempt to propose to Natalya, Lomov says that his Oxen Meadows touch her birchwood. Natalya interrupts Lomov and claims that Oxen Meadows belong to them. Lomov refuses to accept this and asks her to see the documents. He claims that his aunt’s grandmother gave the free use of these Meadows to the peasants of her father’s grandfather. But Natalya claims that their land extends to Burnt Marsh and so, Oxen Meadows is surely their property. Lomov tries to tell about the history of the land, but Natalya says for nearly three hundred years they possess the land. Natalya accuses Lomov of ingratitude and even warns to send her mowers out to the Meadows. Both of them raise their voice to claim Oxen Meadows as their property.

4. “If you like, I’ll make you a present of them.”-Who is the speaker? Who is the person spoken to? What would the speaker make a present of? Why did the speaker say so?

Ans.- In Chekhov’s ‘The Proposal’ Lomov is the speaker.

       Lomov says this to Natalya.

The speaker, Lomov, would make a present of the Oxen Meadows.

When Lomov goes on repeating that Oxen Meadows belong to them, Natalya finds his claim nonsense. Lomov wants to show the evidence but Natalya denies everything. She firmly states that she wants nothing of Lomov and gives up nothing of hers. At this stage of argument Lomov says this to justify his principle.

5. Why does Lomov leave Chubukov’s house?

Ans.- In Anton Chekhov’s one-act play, ‘The Proposal, Lomov comes to Chubukov’s house with an intention to propose to Natalya for marriage. But he gets entangled in a sharp argument with Natalya over a plot of land called Oxen Meadows. Natalya and Lomov both claim that Oxen Meadows are their respective property. When Natalya’s father Chubukov enters, he also claims that Oxen Meadows belong to them. As the father and the daughter remain adamant on the issue, Lomov warns to take the issue to court. Chubukov instantly abuses the Lomovs as ‘pettifoger’ and Lomov points out how Chubukov’s grandfather has been tried for embezzlement. The argument turns to a furious excavation of family scandal. Lomov cannot bear this excitement and his foot goes numb. Being insulted, he staggers out of Chubukov’s house.

6. “Bring him back! Back! Ah! Bring him here… Quick, quick! I’m ill! Fetch him!…I’m dying! Fetch him.”-Who says this and to whom? When is it said? Why is the speaker so excited?

Ans.- Natalya Stepanovna says this in Chekhov’s hilarous farce ‘The Proposal. She says this to her father, Chubukov.

When Lomov departs from Chubukov’s house without expressing his desire to Natalya, Chubukov tells her about the proposal. He informs that Lomov has expressed his desire to marry Natalya. Love-sick Natalya now understands that the argument over Oxen Meadows has done a harmful act to her life. Natalya now wants to make up the situation by calling him back. She betrays immense passion for him.

Natalya is a maid of 25. She has not still been able to find her man. She is love-sick. She cannot afford a chance to miss such a proposal. So, she is very-much upset. However, her passion for Lomov has been presented in an exaggerated manner.

7. Justify the title of the play ‘The Proposal’.

Or, Comment on the aptness of the title ‘The Proposal’

Or, Comment upon the significance of the title ‘The Proposal’.

Ans.- In Anton Chekhov’s one-act play ‘The Proposal, all of the characters are some way or the other influenced by the marriage proposal. Lomov is desperate for a wife. Natalya has not found her man. Chubukov wants his daughter to get married soon. Lomov’s intention makes Chubukov jubilant. However before unfolding his proposal to Natalya Lomov becomes entangled in two long arguments with her, first over a disputed plot of land and then over their hunting dogs. So Natalya does not get any proposal from Lomov. However, the proposal is successfully complemented by the marriage at the end because of Chubukov’s presence of mind. The title ‘The Proposal’ appears to be more meaningful for that.

8. Estimate the play ‘The Proposal’ as a one-act play.

Ans.- A one-act play is a short dramatic work consisting of only one act. It generally concentrates on a single episode or situation and characters are limited in such plays. A one act play may be described as the dramatic equivalent of a short story. Anton Chekhov’s ‘The Proposal’ is a successful one-act play as it concentrates on a single issue of the marriage proposal of Lomov to marry Chubukov’s daughter, Natalya. There are only three characters-Lomov, Natalya and Chubukov. The play advances rapidly and ends abruptly. The way Chekhov alternates the marriage proposal and the arguments, it becomes entertaining for the audience. In short, Chekhov had been able to write an interesting one-act play though he was not happy himself with his creation.

9. Narrate the character of Lomov.

Or, Sketch the character of Lomov as you find in the play.

Ans.- Anton Chekhov’s one-act play ‘The Proposal’ centres around Lomov’s proposal for Chubukov’s daughter, Natalya. Lomov is a typical feudal landowner. Born and brought up in a feudal milieu he looks at marriage as a social relation rather than a personal one. He decides to marry to maintain his social status Lomov is a hypochondriac. He always remains obsessed with his real or imaginary illness and spends sleepless nights due to insomnia. He is egoistic and adamant over the trifling issues of a small plot of land and the hunting dogs. He is unstable in his purpose, unpredictable in his action, ridiculous in his decision, but he is coincidentally or successful in achieving his goal.

10. Sketch the character of Natalya.

Or, Describe Natalya.

Ans.- In the game of the marriage proposal, Natalya remains unaware about her marriage proposal for less a long time. So, the ‘love-sick cat’ does not show any favour for lomov, a bachelor. Instead, she develops a long and furious quarrel over a disputed plot of land called Oxen Meadows. She is lonely and desperate for a husband. It becomes clear only when she goes frantic to get Lomov back after she learns about Lomov’s marriage proposal from her father. Natalya cannot deny her ego and again gets involved in an outrageous quarrel, now over the hunting dogs. Even after getting married she carries on her argument. She is prepared to spend her life with her hypochondriac, insomniac, unstable husband probably as ‘an excellent housekeeper’.

11. Describe Chubukov.

Ans.- In Anton Chekhov’s play ‘The Proposal’ Chubukov is a landowner with feudal mindset. He looks at marriage as an economic settlement rather than a personal desire. Chubukov thinks her daughter a liability and wants her to get married soon. Though he does not welcome Lomov cordially, his address is full of tender words. He is happy with Lomov’s proposal as it will offer him a permanent relief. This attitude can be found in almost every patriarchal family in our time too. Chubukov cannot sacrifice his feudal ego and gets entangled twice in furious arguments with Lomov. However his encouragement helps Lomov and Natalya to get married in spite of their unpreparedness. He remains a firm connector between two unstable characters.

12. Describe the quarrel over the hunting dogs.

Or, Explain the issue of second debate between Lomov and Natalya.

Ans.- In spite of her every caution Natalya contradicts Lomov when he describes his dog, Guess, the best. Natalya comments that it was too much to spend 125 roubles for Guess. They got a better dog, Squeezer for 85 roubles only. Lomov readily finds Squeezer’s faults – it is overshot; as a result it is a bad hunter. Natalya then describes Squeezer as a pure dog and Guess as impure, old, ugly and like a worn-out cab-horse. Chubukov says Guess is old and short in the muzzle. Lomov mentions how Squeezer was left behind but Guess ran neck and neck with the Count’s dog. Then they leave the issue of the dogs and starts excavating each other’s family scandals.
